Thyme has a rich history spanning ancient civilizations. The Egyptians used it in embalming, while ancient Greeks burned it as incense in temples and considered it a symbol of courage.
The etymology of the word thyme comes from the Greek word thymos, meaning courage or strength. Roman soldiers used to bathe in thyme before battle, believing it would grant them strength and boldness.
The primary component of thyme oil is thymol, a natural compound with antiseptic properties. Before modern antibiotics were discovered, thymol was widely used as a disinfectant and antiseptic in hospitals and on the battlefield during World War I.
