Additional information
1-Octen-3-ol is so characteristic of the aroma of mushrooms that it is frequently called "mushroom alcohol" in the fragrance world. It serves as one of the key compounds that give fresh mushrooms their distinct scent.
The human nose can detect 1-Octen-3-ol at extremely low concentrations, just a few parts per billion. This sensitivity explains why we can perceive the aroma of mushrooms or aromatic herbs from a distance.
Winemakers are well acquainted with this ingredient, as it contributes to the characteristic profile of certain wines. In small quantities it adds complexity, while in higher concentrations it can impart earthy, mushroom-like notes to wine.
