Description
Styrax is obtained by collecting and distilling the sap from styrax trees and shrubs. Its use dates back to antiquity, with references to the production and trade of the resin going back at least to ancient Babylon. Today, much of the styrax oil comes from the American sweetgum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua), which is highly valued by perfumers. Its scent is characterized as sweet woody-balsamic, with notes of bitter almond and spicy cinnamon, adding depth and complexity to fragrance compositions.

- In the traditional medicine of many cultures, styrax was used to treat respiratory conditions, skin problems, and as an antiseptic. In Chinese medicine, it is still used today to relieve coughs and chest pain.
