In traditional Asian medicine, Ceylon citronella oil was used to treat fevers, headaches, joint pain, and digestive issues, long before it became known in the West as an insect repellent.
There are two main types of citronella used in the fragrance industry: Ceylon citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) and Java citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus). Ceylon citronella has a sweeter and more delicate scent, whereas Java citronella is more intense and richer in citronellal.
The insect-repellent properties of citronella oil stem mainly from specific chemical compounds such as citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol, which interfere with insect olfactory receptors, making it difficult for them to locate humans.
