Tolu balsam has been used for centuries in traditional South American medicine to treat coughs, colds, and respiratory conditions.
The Myroxylon trees that produce Tolu balsam grow mainly in Colombia and other regions of northern South America, with the name Tolu originating from a small Colombian town.
Aside from perfumery, Tolu balsam is approved as a food additive in many countries, where it serves as a vanilla flavor enhancer in sweets and beverages.
