The name "propionic" has Greek origins, derived from the words "protos" (first) and "pion" (fat), as it was the first fatty acid to be identified.
Propionic acid is widely used as a food preservative in many everyday products, such as baked goods and processed foods, by preventing mold growth.
In addition to rum, propionic acid is found naturally in various cheeses and fermented foods, where it is produced during fermentation by specific bacteria.
