Additional information
Ancient use: Caraway has been used for more than 5,000 years! Archaeologists have discovered caraway seeds in Mesopotamian excavations, and it is also mentioned in Egyptian medical texts from 1500 BC.
Caraway is a key ingredient in traditional baking across Central and Northern Europe. In Germany, the famous rye bread known as Pumpernickel owes part of its characteristic flavor to caraway seeds.
As a biennial plant, caraway produces seeds only in its second year of life. Its white or pink flowers form distinctive umbrella-shaped clusters, a characteristic of the Apiaceae family, which it shares with fennel and anise.
