Despite its name, Peru balsam does not originate primarily from Peru! The majority of its production takes place in El Salvador. The name arose historically because the product was initially exported to Europe through Peruvian ports.
The balsam is harvested using a traditional technique called tapping: collectors make careful incisions in the tree bark and place cloths to absorb the precious sap, which are then boiled to extract the oil.
Peru balsam has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat skin conditions, wounds, and respiratory problems. Today, aside from fragrances, it is also used as a natural flavoring ingredient in chocolate and vanilla products.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
