Bitter orange brings amber notes to fine fragrances while adding animalic and floral nuances to orange-based compositions. Botanically, it is a cross between the pomelo fruit (Citrus maxima) and the mandarin (Citrus reticulata), belonging to the Rutaceae family within the Citrus genus.
The production of bitter orange essential oil faces major challenges due to citrus greening disease. This fatal disease, for which there is no cure, is transmitted by an insect (psylla) that attacks young citrus shoots. The result is the premature death of many trees, leading to reduced overall production and lower essential oil quality, marked by a drop in D-limonene levels.
