The word "eucalyptus" comes from the Greek words "eu" (well) and "kalypto" (to cover), referring to the cap that covers the flower bud before it blooms.
Koalas feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, even though they contain substances toxic to most other animals. They have developed a specialized digestive system that allows them to detoxify these compounds.
In the 19th century, eucalyptus trees were intentionally planted in many Mediterranean regions to drain marshlands and combat malaria, as they absorb vast amounts of water from the soil.
