Liatrix is an ingredient used in luxury perfumery for fougere, amber, and blond tobacco notes. Native to the United States, the plant belongs to the Asteraceae family and the genus Liatris. Its flowers grow in clusters at the end of a long stem, and its leaves are extracted for use in fragrance.
Liatrix is often included in compositions featuring hay notes. It is notable for its coumarin and herbal aroma, which adds characteristic tones to fragrance blends. Beyond perfumery, Liatrix is also used in tobacco flavoring, enriching the scent profile of tobacco products.
Liatrix is also known by the common English names "Blazing Star" and "Gayfeather", which reflect the striking appearance of its flowers.
Native American tribes used various Liatris species for medicinal purposes, including treating pain, addressing kidney conditions, and soothing snakebites.
The coumarin that gives Liatrix its characteristic scent is also found in other well-known perfumery ingredients like tonka beans and cinnamon, creating a sweet, warm note reminiscent of freshly cut hay.
