Labdanum, the scent that isobutyl cinnamate resembles, has a history of use dating back to antiquity. Egyptians and Greeks used it in religious ceremonies and as an ingredient in perfumes thousands of years ago.
Isobutyl cinnamate belongs to the ester family, chemical compounds known for their fruity aromas. Esters are the components that give fruits their characteristic scents, which is why this fragrance has such pleasant fruity notes.
Laboratory production of ingredients like isobutyl cinnamate can be more environmentally friendly than extracting natural ingredients. Collecting 1 kilogram of natural labdanum requires about 1,000 kilograms of plant material, whereas synthesis in the lab requires significantly fewer resources.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
