A time-honored sacred ingredient: Sandalwood has been used for more than 4,000 years in religious ceremonies in India, China, and Egypt, considered a bridge of communication with the divine.
The extraction of sandalwood oil requires patience and time - trees must be at least 30 years old before harvest, while the oil yield is just 5 to 6 percent of the wood's weight, explaining why it is among the most expensive essential oils in the world.
Due to overexploitation, many sandalwood species are threatened with extinction. Today, sustainable cultivation programs in Australia and India strive to secure the future of this precious resource.
