The Pistacia lentiscus, known in Greek as Schinos or the mastic tree, is a shrub belonging to the Anacardiaceae family and the genus Pistacia. It produces berries that start out red and turn black as they ripen. Oil extraction takes place between December and January, once the berries are fully mature.
In perfumery, Schinos oil offers green, spicy and smoky notes, and is often used in fragrances with fig or lime profiles. It is a key ingredient in fragrance families such as fougere, chypre and woody compositions. A specific use is revitalizing green notes, such as galbanum essential oil, lending them a more modern feel.
It is important not to confuse it with Pistacia vera, the tree that produces edible pistachios. Although they belong to the same genus, they are distinct species with different uses in perfumery and the cosmetics industry.
