Menthol creates a cooling sensation without actually lowering skin temperature. Instead, it activates cold receptors (TRPM8) in the skin, tricking the brain into perceiving cold.
In nature, menthol exists in two forms: L-menthol and D-menthol. Notably, only L-menthol provides the characteristic cooling sensation, while D-menthol has the same scent without the cooling effect.
Menthol has been used therapeutically for centuries across various cultures. From ancient Greece and Rome to traditional Chinese medicine, menthol was utilized for relief from headaches, respiratory congestion, and muscle aches.
