Skatole hides an olfactory paradox: Although it is a component of feces and has an unpleasant odor at high concentrations, when diluted it is used in some of the most luxurious perfumes in the world!
The effect of concentration on skatole is striking: At high concentrations it has a strongly unpleasant odor, while at extremely dilute doses it develops pleasant, sweet, floral notes reminiscent of orange blossom.
The name skatole comes from the Greek word skatos (dung), referring to its initial discovery in human feces in 1877 by the German physician Ludwig Brieger.
