Pink pepper is actually the fruit of a peppertree, belonging to the Anacardiaceae family and the genus Schinus. Despite its name, it is not botanically related to common black pepper. The pink fruits are drupes, which are fleshy fruits with a hard core, that appear on the tree's flowers.
In perfumery, pink pepper is mainly used to create spicy, fresh, floral, and woody notes. It imparts a distinct character to compositions featuring clove, hyacinth, and rose. Due to its high cost, it is primarily used in luxury perfumes and fine fragrance compositions.
Family ties: Pink pepper belongs to the same family as cashews, mangoes, and poison ivy! This unexpected botanical relationship explains why some people with tree nut allergies may also show sensitivity to pink pepper.
Spice world alias: Despite its name, pink pepper is not a pepper at all! It is an entirely different fruit that merely resembles peppercorns, yet has a sweeter and fruitier flavor.
Traditional medicine: Indigenous populations of South America have used pink pepper for medicinal purposes for centuries, including the treatment of respiratory issues and as an anti-inflammatory.
