Description
Eugenol is a naturally occurring component found in various essential oils. It appears primarily in clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg, but also exists in many herbs and fruits such as basil, spearmint, peaches, and black currant. Perfumers add it to create a spicy scent reminiscent of cloves. The aroma of eugenol is often associated with autumn notes, bringing warmth and depth to fragrance compositions. It is widely used in oriental or woody fragrances, as well as in blends featuring spice notes.

Regulatory information
Eugenol is a well-studied and frequently used fragrance ingredient. It has been recognized by European Union scientific bodies as a potential skin sensitizer, meaning it may cause a skin reaction such as redness, rash, or itching in some individuals. The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) has completed a formal safety assessment and concluded that eugenol is a weak skin sensitizer. Based on these findings, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has established standards for acceptable eugenol concentrations in various consumer products. In an extensive skin testing study, 99.5% of participants reported no skin reaction to eugenol.
