Description

Limonene is a colorless liquid with a distinctive lemony scent, found abundantly in nature, primarily in the peels of citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. It is also present in apples, tea tree, and tomatoes. Its use in perfumery and cosmetics is widespread, as it imparts its unique, refreshing aroma to numerous everyday products. Perfumers choose it to create fresh, vibrant, and citrus notes, imparting a sense of invigoration and cleanliness to fragrances, creams, and lotions.

Additional information

Limonene has two different forms, the optical isomers D-limonene and L-limonene. D-limonene has an orange scent, while L-limonene smells like pine.
Beyond perfumery, limonene is used as a natural solvent in eco-friendly cleaners, replacing chemical solvents.
Limonene also functions as a natural insect repellent, as many insects avoid the scent of citrus.

Regulatory information

Limonene is a well-studied and widely used fragrance ingredient. European Union scientific bodies have characterized it as a potential skin sensitizer. This means there is a possibility it may cause temporary skin reactions (such as redness, rashes, or itching). These reactions can be difficult to pinpoint and are equally likely to be caused by natural as well as synthetic ingredients. In an extensive skin testing study, 99.9% of participants reported no reaction to limonene. RIFM is in the process of developing the official safety assessment for this ingredient.
