Description
Diethyl phthalate is a valuable ingredient with no scent of its own, widely used in perfumery to bind individual ingredients together into a unified fragrance. It acts as an invisible link that allows various aromatic elements to coexist harmoniously. Perfumers manufacture this ingredient in laboratories using modern methods. It can originate from phthalic acid, which is found naturally in lily of the valley flower oil. In recent years, the fragrance industry has increasingly turned to renewable raw materials for its production, helping preserve natural resources and promote sustainability.

Additional information
- Unlike most fragrance ingredients, diethyl phthalate has no scent of its own! It acts like an invisible conductor leading the fragrance orchestra without adding a note of its own.
- It functions as a silent assistant in fragrance compositions, allowing ingredients that might not normally pair well to coexist harmoniously. Without it, many complex fragrances could not be created.
- Diethyl phthalate is one of the most extensively studied fragrance ingredients globally, backed by research spanning decades of use in the cosmetics and fragrance industry.

Regulatory information
Diethyl phthalate is an extensively evaluated and frequently used fragrance ingredient. The European Commission Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has issued a positive opinion on its safe use in cosmetic products. Additionally, a US Consumer Product Safety Commission report concludes there is insufficient evidence to classify it as a hazardous ingredient. However, a separate World Health Organization (WHO) report notes that it caused a limited number of skin reactions in certain studies. Its use is not restricted by the EU Cosmetics Regulation or REACH chemical legislation. Notably, the state of California requires its inclusion on ingredient lists and links it to potential serious health impacts.
